The Pedantic Coach

PERSON – Hello, I hear you are a Coach.  I have a problem, I suffer from anxiety.

COACH – Hi, well your hearing is OK – tell me, do you know why you are doing anxiety?

PERSON – Why am I doing anxiety?   I not choosing to do it – I’m just anxious and I’m suffering from it.  Do you deal with that?

COACH – Sorry, no, I can’t deal with your anxiety.

PERSON – What!  I thought you were a Coach.  Don’t Coaches deal with anxiety?

COACH – No, only you can deal with your anxiety.  All I can do is point out a few things that can help.

PERSON – OK – sounds like the same thing.  So how can you help me deal with my anxiety then?

COACH – Well done for asking.  The first thing you can do is see that you have two problems.  The anxiety you are doing and the suffering you are doing.  Which is the most painful?

PERSON – My anxiety of course.  If I wasn’t anxious I wouldn’t be suffering.  Can you help or not?

COACH – I don’t know yet.  That depends on how attached you are to both.  And know that your attachment is reinforced by the way you think and speak about them both.  So firstly, you can stop saying ‘I’m anxious’ and start saying ‘I’m doing anxiety.’

You are not the anxiety.  The anxiety is just something you are doing.  So stop confusing you with the anxiety.  Once you make this distinction, in your mind and your words, dealing with it becomes easier.

PERSON – OK – so I can see there’s me and there’s the anxiety.  Now what?
